Sobaka Studio!

A classic beat 'em up with an appropriate plot - the newly converted Shaolin monk, together with his brothers, must fight back the forces of Evil, and of course, his minions, pirates. The drawing is done in a very peculiar style - very aggressive, bright and merciless, and the ink as if emphasizes the sharpness of the composition. The influence of "House of Flying Daggers" is most strongly felt here, but other classic martial arts films have gotten their share, and the authors themselves give the player to experiment. For example, nothing prevents from changing bright and rich colors to black and white sepia by Akira Kurosawa, emphasizing the graphicality of shadows, and a distinct play of light, not burdened with an extra load of multicolor. It is a little harder to play the game in this mode, but the pleasure of being in a classic black and white film is difficult to describe in words.

The fighting in the game is something absolutely wonderful, which in my opinion is the most important achievement of the game. It is as if you yourself feel a combat staff in the hands of a monk, so intuitively and smoothly the movements of the protagonist obey your fingers. And it would be fine if this only concerned the main character, but the enemies move and attack so believably that the right choice of timings, the feeling of a sparkling battle, understanding the strength of your staff and the weapons of enemies begin to play a huge role. And now you can easily get away from the enemy's blow, substituting another careless enemy under his unstoppable inertia, or ideally fit the Shaolin spiritual forces into the battle scheme, the secrets of which were revealed to you by wise mentors. The authors try to diversify the levels, there are battles with waves of enemies, and tasks for a while, bosses of different difficulty levels, and the classic, but so much loved by old school players - "just fill all enemies with their faces without restrictions."

“9 Monkeys of Shaolin” feels like a very thoughtful project in its idea, which knows exactly what it wants to offer the player. An unstoppable polished action game that pays homage to the classics, but he himself does not hesitate to experiment and open up new horizons. An extremely curious project.

9 Monkeys of Shaolin:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your name is Wei Cheng, a fisherman who lived in the Middle Kingdom where the legendary Shaolin Temple was erected a hundred years ago. Its inhabitants were fearless monks who worked day in day out on their body, mind and soul. They were famous for their martial arts techniques but would only use the art to defend themselves and the temple. However, when the Wokou invasion began and the Kingdom was about to fall, the Monks broke their own rules and joined forces with the government to repel the Wokou from Middle Kingdom. But your own village was continually attacked by pirates, and while the fishermen were extremely skilled in the art of catching fish, they were not generally so skilled in martial arts. The good news is that your grandfather (who raised you) was also a martial arts expert and passed on some of his fighting knowledge to you. But one fateful day, your grandfather was fighting another pirate raid by himself, and despite you running to his aid, he was killed, the village was demolished, and you were heavily wounded and left for dead on the shore of your village. Luckily, you were rescued by the monks and transported to a fortified house (safehouse) to heal. That’s how the story of the 9 Monkeys of Shaolin starts.
9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a colourful side-scroller beat’em up game developed by Sobaka Studio and published by Buka Entertainment on the 16th of October 2020 on the Steam platform. The game is also available on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
The game consists of five chapters which have several short missions each and five bosses to beat in total. There are four difficulty levels to choose from: Novice, Warrior, Master and Legend. I would recommend playing your first playthrough on the Warrior difficulty as Novice will be a walk in the park for players who are used to this type of game. The Master difficulty is seriously challenging solo and you really need to play with a friend if you decide to give it a go on the Legend difficulty.
As mentioned, the stages are quite short and thankfully, the first one will be a tutorial (but you find yourself heavily injured at the end).
From here, your main base will be at the fortified house where you’ll be able to launch your next mission by talking to the Master and leader, Guangli. If you talk to Xuanpai, you’ll be able to replay any of the previous complete missions, train your fighting skills with Zongfei and swap weapons and other items by having a chat with Liu Haibo.
In the story, each of the missions will have one or two rewards. The main reward is golden wheels which you need in order to upgrade your skills while talking to Zongfei, and you might also have a new weapon or a new item to wear which can give you additional benefits.
At first you’ll start with the basic stance of kick and slash moves, as well as a powerful hit which is the thrust. You’ll also be able to parry attacks with your main weapon and evade hits by jumping away from your closest enemy, which sometimes can be really tricky as you have opponents all around you. As you move through the chapters, you’ll unlock an additional six news skills. And by the way, each of these skills has its own tree to upgrade. So, if you need more golden wheels, you might fancy replaying one or more previous missions to accumulate a few more wheels. Bear in mind that you’ll gain fewer wheels if you successfully complete the mission again compared to the first time you played it.
The missions are pretty much a move-and-stop sequence. You move for a bit until enemies appear from all sides of the screen, and you’ll have to defeat all of them before you can move again. But let me tell you, it’s a hectic battling to say the least. Enemies in trees blowing darts at you from a distance, which you can only kill by parrying and deflecting their darts back at them. Same thing with the soldiers with muskets and bows and arrows unless they are on an accessible area on the ground and close by. And that’s not all, some will come at you with katanas, spikes, oars and other weapons from that era.
You’ll get hit more than once and your health will take a serious blow as you are cornered by several opponents at once. But you can regenerate your health by drinking cups of green tea which you can find by breaking down wooden crates and barrels lying on your path. There is also red, yellow and white tea in these crates and barrels. The yellow tea will boost your gauge power so you can refill it and activate your powerful moves. The red tea, when consumed, will elevate the damage you inflict upon enemies for several seconds, while the white tea will offer extra armour for several seconds.
Keep the combo going by repeatedly hitting enemies and try to gain as many points as possible but as soon as you get hit, the combo will restart. Whether or not you achieve the highest combo in any level, it doesn’t seem to give you additional golden wheels when you complete the stage.
There is one secret figurine to collect per level; they are pretty easy to find as they stand out clearly in the environment. Each figurine will give you access to fun content, such as having big hands or a big head when activated. These changes can be activated at your fortified house. They are a fun little addition to the game.
The action in this game is fabulous with spectacular animations and some over the top martial arts moves which are fun to see. I am a big fan of the flying kicks, especially when I can move from one end of the screen to the next constantly in the air and hitting enemies along the way - it’s just fabulous!
Colourful graphics, and the story is pretty good, too. I like the fact that you can replay each of your previous missions and still receive golden wheels for your trouble. Even though the levels are fairly short, if you play the game in the Master difficulty, they’ll be a challenge. The game is surprisingly playable with your mouse and keyboard, but I strongly recommend using a gamepad.
Positives:
~~~~~~~

+ Colourful graphics and fabulous animations
+ Fun Story consisting of 5 chapters with several missions each
+ Single player and co-op modes
+ 4 levels of difficulty
+ Easy and fun to play
+ Achievements

Negatives:
~~~~~~~~
- No trading cards as yet!
- Short levels
9 Monkeys of Shaolin: A well-made martial arts Beat’Em Up game with colourful graphics and spectacular moves all way through!
7/10
Classic beat'em up that's surprisingly good! Sure it has a basic story full of absolute nonsense but the most important part, the combat, is fun. It's fast, hectic, and the main character has a bunch of moves. The game is packed with all kinds of mechanics. Enemies popping out of the woodwork to shoot you while you're trying to defeat several in melee range. It's a little tricky to keep an eye out for them but it's much more interesting because of it. Not only do you have to worry about the enemies in front of you but then to block the incoming projectiles is so much fun.
To add to the fun, the enemies are on the edge of relentless. They attack just enough to make it seem like they're attacking together. Still, there are two ways to play. A lot of blocking or a lot of dodging. There isn't a real limit on either so it's up to your playstyle. I chose to bounce around the level like a spaz.
It's really quite a lot of fun. Swinging the staff around you can hit multiple enemies. But not the armored enemies, you need to poke them instead. There's a ton of variety to keep the fights interesting. You get three basic moves. One for swinging around your staff to hit multiple enemies. The next is for poking armored enemies but I quite like it since it attacks at a distance. The final one is a kick to be used on enemies without helmets but it's good to attack from afar. The combat is responsive to the controls and gives proper feedback to the player. Exactly what you're looking for in this type of game.
Anyway, I appreciate the diversity of the moves the most. Not only do you have the three basic attacks but six more qi power moves. The ways of the monk are secretive and powerful so you only learn the last set of three moves late in the game. It takes some qi energy to perform the moves but it charges so quickly you get to use them all the time.
Overall, 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a fun little indie game. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much but when the combat is this much fun it's hard not to have a blast. It's a bit short and some of the level mechanics are a bit out of place but it doesn't get in the way too much.
Truly great video review,
9 Monkeys of Shaolin is an old school style beat’em up, developed by the hand of the Russian studio, Sobaka Studio. After a few hiccups in its development and seeing its release date postponed for a few months, this is a title that promises a few hours of fun both at single player and multiplayer level, as it is possible to invite a friend to help with the campaign.
Who never thought to be a Jet Li in this life? Despite being a simple game and even if it’s not exploring much of the kung fu style, the fact of being a beat’em up helped a lot to keep this title under my eye.
Mixing reality with fantasy, the story is set in a turbulent period in ancient China, where the Wei Cheng region suffered constant attacks from bandits. As a curiosity, the whole game has voice acting, and the person who gives voice to the main character gave voice to Jin Sakai (Ghost of Tsushima).
One day an attack by Japanese pirates left the entire region shattered and with only one survivor … Fortunately our main character was saved by a group of monks, but his family and friends were not so lucky.
At first Wei Chang is moved by a thirst for revenge for who caused all this destruction, but soon he is faced with a much more complicated situation, since obscure entities are beginning to appear. The mission then moves on to try to save the entire region from these attacks. With the teachings of his master he changed his name to Daokong and learned to control all his power in powerful attacks.
The narrative is not at all the main focus, but it is present and helps to orchestrate the whole environment.
The fun comes from the gameplay that involves taking down all enemies with stabs and kicks. Daokong has a staff and his legs as a weapon at his disposal as he moves from left to right. In the beginning, Wei Cheng’s list of movements, still as a fisherman, is not very extensive, but they are effective. It has a “parry” ability, the basic attack, the jump kick, and finally the ability to dodge. As we move through the chapter, the book opens, and with it three skill trees. Although I mostly placed almost all points in the first skill tree, which is intended for the physical condition and damage applied by the character, the rest are interesting and are intended for the special abilities that consume the yellow Qi bar, presented below the life bar.
To apply these special skills it is necessary to press one of the “triggers”, which allow performing a powerful that leaves the weapon with a kind of aura and an area attack that unfolds between slowing down opponents or for example the possibility to let enemies levitate and completely exposed to attacks.
In the selection of each level, it is possible to see the number of points that can be received if it is completed. These points are intended for the previously mentioned skill trees.
Most of the scenario is destructible and it is really important to explore this possibility as it provides good things for its exploration. The integration of teas of different colors is equivalent to different buffs. Green is intended for the recovery of life, red is equivalent to a temporary damage buff, yellow is equivalent to the possibility of using the Qi bar and consequently special attacks for a short period of time, and finally, white tea, which is equivalent to a kind of impenetrable armor for brief moments.
It is not a very long title and it is perfectly possible to finish all five chapters in less than five hours. Fortunately, there is the possibility to play the entire campaign accompanied by a friend, both online and locally.
Overall, 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is not a bad title, but it is also not a memorable title, there is a lack of spice for this purpose. It’s a fun beat’em up to play with friends, but it gets a bit boring after a short while. It is recommended to lovers of the genre.
