9 Monkeys of Shaolin:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your name is Wei Cheng, a fisherman who lived in the Middle Kingdom where the legendary Shaolin Temple was erected a hundred years ago. Its inhabitants were fearless monks who worked day in day out on their body, mind and soul. They were famous for their martial arts techniques but would only use the art to defend themselves and the temple. However, when the Wokou invasion began and the Kingdom was about to fall, the Monks broke their own rules and joined forces with the government to repel the Wokou from Middle Kingdom. But your own village was continually attacked by pirates, and while the fishermen were extremely skilled in the art of catching fish, they were not generally so skilled in martial arts. The good news is that your grandfather (who raised you) was also a martial arts expert and passed on some of his fighting knowledge to you. But one fateful day, your grandfather was fighting another pirate raid by himself, and despite you running to his aid, he was killed, the village was demolished, and you were heavily wounded and left for dead on the shore of your village. Luckily, you were rescued by the monks and transported to a fortified house (safehouse) to heal. That’s how the story of the 9 Monkeys of Shaolin starts.
9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a colourful side-scroller beat’em up game developed by Sobaka Studio and published by Buka Entertainment on the 16th of October 2020 on the Steam platform. The game is also available on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
The game consists of five chapters which have several short missions each and five bosses to beat in total. There are four difficulty levels to choose from: Novice, Warrior, Master and Legend. I would recommend playing your first playthrough on the Warrior difficulty as Novice will be a walk in the park for players who are used to this type of game. The Master difficulty is seriously challenging solo and you really need to play with a friend if you decide to give it a go on the Legend difficulty.
As mentioned, the stages are quite short and thankfully, the first one will be a tutorial (but you find yourself heavily injured at the end).
From here, your main base will be at the fortified house where you’ll be able to launch your next mission by talking to the Master and leader, Guangli. If you talk to Xuanpai, you’ll be able to replay any of the previous complete missions, train your fighting skills with Zongfei and swap weapons and other items by having a chat with Liu Haibo.
In the story, each of the missions will have one or two rewards. The main reward is golden wheels which you need in order to upgrade your skills while talking to Zongfei, and you might also have a new weapon or a new item to wear which can give you additional benefits.
At first you’ll start with the basic stance of kick and slash moves, as well as a powerful hit which is the thrust. You’ll also be able to parry attacks with your main weapon and evade hits by jumping away from your closest enemy, which sometimes can be really tricky as you have opponents all around you. As you move through the chapters, you’ll unlock an additional six news skills. And by the way, each of these skills has its own tree to upgrade. So, if you need more golden wheels, you might fancy replaying one or more previous missions to accumulate a few more wheels. Bear in mind that you’ll gain fewer wheels if you successfully complete the mission again compared to the first time you played it.
The missions are pretty much a move-and-stop sequence. You move for a bit until enemies appear from all sides of the screen, and you’ll have to defeat all of them before you can move again. But let me tell you, it’s a hectic battling to say the least. Enemies in trees blowing darts at you from a distance, which you can only kill by parrying and deflecting their darts back at them. Same thing with the soldiers with muskets and bows and arrows unless they are on an accessible area on the ground and close by. And that’s not all, some will come at you with katanas, spikes, oars and other weapons from that era.
You’ll get hit more than once and your health will take a serious blow as you are cornered by several opponents at once. But you can regenerate your health by drinking cups of green tea which you can find by breaking down wooden crates and barrels lying on your path. There is also red, yellow and white tea in these crates and barrels. The yellow tea will boost your gauge power so you can refill it and activate your powerful moves. The red tea, when consumed, will elevate the damage you inflict upon enemies for several seconds, while the white tea will offer extra armour for several seconds.
Keep the combo going by repeatedly hitting enemies and try to gain as many points as possible but as soon as you get hit, the combo will restart. Whether or not you achieve the highest combo in any level, it doesn’t seem to give you additional golden wheels when you complete the stage.
There is one secret figurine to collect per level; they are pretty easy to find as they stand out clearly in the environment. Each figurine will give you access to fun content, such as having big hands or a big head when activated. These changes can be activated at your fortified house. They are a fun little addition to the game.
The action in this game is fabulous with spectacular animations and some over the top martial arts moves which are fun to see. I am a big fan of the flying kicks, especially when I can move from one end of the screen to the next constantly in the air and hitting enemies along the way - it’s just fabulous!
Colourful graphics, and the story is pretty good, too. I like the fact that you can replay each of your previous missions and still receive golden wheels for your trouble. Even though the levels are fairly short, if you play the game in the Master difficulty, they’ll be a challenge. The game is surprisingly playable with your mouse and keyboard, but I strongly recommend using a gamepad.
